Torah Pearls – Season 2 – Vayishlah

Then Jacob was left alone, and a Man wrestled with him until the breaking of day…And He said, “Let Me go, for the day breaks.” But he said, “I will not let You go unless You bless me!” So He said to him, “What is your name?” He said, “Jacob.” And He said, “Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel; for you have struggled with God and with men, and have prevailed.” – Genesis 32:24,26-28

    Thank you, good job.

Curious though, Rabbi Singer said that Issac may have been still alive after the 34 years?

Hosea 12:4-5 (3-4 in the Christian version) makes it clear that Jacob wrestled with an angel, not with G-d. “In the womb, he [Jacob] seized his brother’s [Esau’s] heel, and with his strength he [Jacob] strove with an angel. 5 He [Jacob] strove with an angel and prevailed. . .”

I appreciate Tovia’s work, as I said previously I do owe him a great deal in coming out of Christianity. But I cringe when I hear things like “a plain reading of the text would be this or that, but here’s what it really means.” I heard too much of that hidden knowledge in the Christian and Messi cricles.

It sounds like Tovia spends a lot time trying to explain why the patriarchs never do anything wrong or shady. I’m not sure I buy that line of reasoning, but I find the rabbinical interesting. There is definitely a big difference in the rabbinate and karaite way of teaching things. I love to listen to season 2 and then season 1 during the week. Thanks for running these shows!

    Praise Yehovah,
    Aaron Kavli
