Old us.

June 21, 2011

Ok so I am blatantly copying Lusi, but thought it might be fun to put up some old photos of us too. Plus it is super raining here today, we’ve played chess, the kids are watching Thunderbirds, I’m still in my pyjamas at 2pm and I’m prostrastinating about the boxes that I should unpack. Anyways…

Old Man Emu: ideas for an Australian Birds unit study

January 9, 2011

The Emu is a large flightless bird. They stand to be 1.5 to 2 metres tall, and on average weight 36 kilograms. They have 3 toes, and long legs which allows them to run extremely fast. In this species, the female is larger than the male.

Emu’s feed on grass, leaves and small insects. They live all over Australia in grasslands.

The female lays up to 20 eggs, which are large and are soft dark green in colour. These eggs are often prized not only by humans for decoration pieces, but by animals as a food source. The male incubates the eggs for a period of 7-8 weeks, and does not leave the nest for this period. When the eggs hatch, the male emu looks after the hatchlings for another six months.

Amazing Fact: The Emu is the world’s third largest bird. The Ostrich and the Cassowary take the top positions.

Animal Facts: The nest of an Emu can be up to 1.5 metres wide!

Learning this fun song is a great way to become familiar with a few Australian birds (plus a kangaroo and a dingo thrown in!)

and for the little ones here’s the Wiggles doing the song with Steve Irwin :)

Yummy Green Smoothies!

January 1, 2011

so you take a banana, a handful of greens (I used baby spinach leaves today), and some cold filtered water.

blend it up…and…voilá!

Delicious Green Smoothie!

I have been drinking these for awhile now, but for the first time today I managed to convince someone else in my family that they really are very tasty! Yay! Now William is my green smoothie partner :)

A home among the gum trees…

December 16, 2010

The kids and I have been having great fun listening and learning (and remembering for me!) a few old Aussie folk songs. Thought you might like this one…Jonah loves it because he says its all about our place here out in the bush :)

I’ve been around the world a couple of times or maybe more
I’ve seen the sights, I’ve had delights on every foreign shore
But when my mates all ask me the place that I adore
I tell them right away

Give me a home among the gumtrees
with lots of plum trees
A sheep or two, and a kangaroo
A clothesline out the back
Verandah out the front
And an old rocking chair

You can see me in the kitchen cooking up a roast
Or Vegemite on toast
Just you and me, a cup of tea
And later on, we’ll settle down and go out on the porch
And watch the possums play

Give me a home among the gumtrees
With lots of plum trees
A sheep or two and a kangaroo
A clothesline out the back
Verandah out the front
And an old rocking chair

There’s a Safeways up the corner and a Woollies down the street
And a brand new place they’ve opened up
where they regulate the heat
But I’d trade them all tomorrow for a little bush retreat
Where the kookaburras call

Give me a home among the gumtrees
With lots of plum trees
A sheep or two and a kangaroo
A clothesline out the back
Verandah out the front
And an old rocking chair

Some people like their houses with fences all around
Others live in mansions and some beneath the ground
But me I like the bush you know with rabbits running round
And a pumpkin vine out back

Give me a home among the gumtrees
With lots of plum trees
A sheep or two and a kangaroo
A clothesline out the back
Verandah out the front
And an old rocking chair

Give me a home among the gumtrees
With lots of plum trees
A sheep or two and a kangaroo
A clothesline out the back
Verandah out the front
And an old rocking chair

Shabbat gathering

November 1, 2010

Actually, everyone was here for the whole weekend…it was wonderful!

I’m still here…

October 25, 2010

I haven’t been around much lately, I know. I miss you all. I miss my blog. I’ll be back soon…just have to crawl across the finish line of year 1 of university…2 weeks to go. In the meantime here’s some pics. See you all soon :)

our resident possums – mother and baby.some of the boys creations (silly billy’s) animals enjoying springtimea visit from our friend Annette (do you like my pink bedsocks?)family fun around the campfireI am managing to read a little more about natural learning. Here’s a thought to leave you with…

Look directly at your child. Practice watching your child without expectations. Try to see what he is really doing, rather than seeing what he’s NOT doing. If you hold the template of “learning” up and squint through that, it will be harder for you to see clearly. Just look. Sandra Dodd on Deschooling.

A quick update

September 13, 2010

I missed the Toby Highlights last week…the feast and shabbat came by so quickly and I just didn’t have the time to put a post together. This week will be another full on one! And Yom Kippor is approaching and I would like to have my heart prepared for that amidst all the goings on around here…so I don’t anticipate that I will be posting highlights for a couple of weeks. I am enjoying using picasa though! So maybe you will see some photos and maybe a two words post here and there…love you all and looking forward to catching up with you on your blogs throughout these appointed times!

These two bottle babies are for sale if you want them (and are not too far away!) I finally got around to taking some shots of Bridget and Jonah’s swim class…indoor heated pool :)

TOBY weekly homeschool highlights ~week 8

June 18, 2010
Even though we haven’t done hardly a scrap in our homeschool this week, I thought I’d make this a TOBY highlights post anyway. Education isn’t just about pen, paper and computers after all! So I had a great time visiting my dad in Queensland. Here’s some pics…
this is dad’s campervan that we drove about 1000kms in up to his place. It took us exactly 48 hours door to door!
the mountain ranges coming into Ipswich.
view from the surf club on Bribie Island looking out to Moreton Island.
Taking Benny for a walk on the beach…

Me and Dad.
I was super blessed to have met some fellow believers to share Shabbat with while I was away too. Wonderful people and we have even been invited back for Sukkot!

So I flew home and Jono and the kids picked me up from Canberra airport. Much to the boys excitement we then spent the rest of the day at the War Memorial!

Corporal Jonah and Private Bill!

We had a late lunch and on the way home stopped to feed these beautiful black swans…

I think that everyone is pleased to have me home…especially this guy :-)

new vests and some reading.

May 30, 2010
So I became really tired of trying to find pure wool garments for my children for winter. I can sort of knit…which means that I’m great at making scarves! I realised that I’m actually quite a visual learner when it comes to handy crafts like knitting and I have not been able to find anyone close by who has the patience or time to teach me. But what I did find was lovely Mrs Povey who offered to knit some things up for me! I love these vests so much…I think they are some of the nicest clothes that my kiddies have ever had! And she made matching beanies and mittens with the leftover wool. So cute.
Jono’s ordered a cardigan for himself next! It’s so great to have some homemade garments that I know are 100% wool. I know that Mrs Povey put a great deal of thought into each vest too, which is priceless :-) Oh, and she has even finished the jumper that I started two years ago and couldn’t finish because, well, I really don’t know how to knit! What a blessing!
and this has nothing to do with anything except that Bridget took some photos of Jono and I listening to William read ‘I can run’ tonight. I wanted to share because I’m super proud of his progress!
 mmmmm….
He’s growing up so fast! It’s happening right before our eyes!

Our millionaire son.

March 29, 2010
As it was a rainy day today, and I had an essay to finish, Jono and the kids spent the better part of the afternoon playing Monopoly! and guess who won???
the 5 year old with owning the entire board including 6 hotels, 5 houses and $3700 to spare. Do you think anybody helped him? Really, not very much!
Dad came 2nd, and would have beaten him if he could :-)

Fish for our pond.

March 4, 2010
As part of our attempt to become more self sufficient,
we now have fish in our dam that we can catch and eat!
10 catfish to keep the dam clean. We won’t be eating these guys. (no scales!)
and 100 golden perch for eating! Well, in about a year when they are big enough…

equalising the water temperature for them…
Jonah telling dad how it all goes…
pouring in some of the pond water first so the fishies don’t freak out and die!
Bye, little fishies! Eat up, grow big and strong…watch out for the yabbies and the turtles!!!
if only the vegetable garden was this easy….

Summer Rains.

February 14, 2010

50mm so I hear! The locals are saying around 6 inches!!! That’s HUGE! Our tank is full. The fields are greening up. Praise YHWH.

(Bridget has taken an interest in the camera today, which is why I am in these shots for a change!!!!)

A cheeky boy.
Don’t get your shoe stuck in the mud, Jonah!

Checking out some ‘goo’ on the Kurrajong pods…
Hmmmm….’what is it Mum?’
‘Not sure…lets look it up and find out together’  (our kids hear this a lot!)
A new shoot!

A poem by Bridget.

February 7, 2010
Late Summer

The white puffy clouds, the tall green trees, the wind rustles through their leaves.
The rain that falls on the dry, dry ground that brings life all around.
The big tall goat reaches high to the sky, and eats all the leaves from the trees so high.
The little goat jumps from fence to fence ,and eats all the green that the rain brings.
We will laugh when we fix the fence, because he can’t jump from here to there!
So he will stay under the nice green trees, and eat all the shrubs, grass and things.
He is happy and so are we.
I like late summer, it’s so lovely!!

a glut of nectarines???

February 3, 2010

Daddy and the children went out to get some fruit from the nectarine tree growing on the side of the road, and this is what they came back with! What should I do with all of these????

I can see the woman.

February 1, 2010

Bridget

turned 12
Most gratefully, Yahweh has blessed me with a daughter who loves the mornings! She is REALLY industrious in the mornings, and when I say that it is a HUGE blessing, I really mean it! We don’t make her do any of this stuff…she asked to be responsible for the mornings. Bridget, you really are doing a great job.
She prepares two feed buckets, milks our two dairy goats and then leads them back into the paddock to their kids.
She has just weaned the 4 month old buck kid, but she is still his ‘mum’.
She feeds the pets…
Lets out the chickens and collects the eggs…
Waters the meager vegetable garden…it would all be dead now if it weren’t for her!
Fills the water for the herd and the birds
…and all this is done before anyone else is even up.

Thanks, Bridge, for being such a valuable member of the household in this way and in many, many others.

We love you!

A super quick (and frugal) dinner idea

January 21, 2010

In my recipe book these are called Egg and Ham pies. However, because in our house we only eat food (ham is not food!) I opted for a variation that is edible :-)

Remove the crusts from 12 slices of bread of your choice, spread each slice with butter and push, spread side down into a 12 cup muffin tray. In a bowl mix together a can of baked beans, 3 lightly beaten eggs and a few shallots. Spoon the mixture over the 12 bread cups, sprinkle with grated cheese, and bake at 200c for about 20 minutes.

My kids love these! You can really use whatever fillings you like, or whatever you have left in the cupboard the day before shopping day (like it is for me today!) Of course, just make sure that it is food that you are eating. According to the One who created the pig, He didn’t make it for food  :-)

Harvesting sunflower seeds!

January 20, 2010
Bill (almost 5) and I harvested one sunflower today while the other children were doing maths with Dad. Who do you think had more fun?!?!?! Not to worry, Jonah and Bridget will get to harvest the other flowers later in the week!
First we consulted our book…
Then made sure the flower was ready to pick…
This one isn’t ready yet…
We brought the ready to harvest flower inside and started to pick out the seeds…
rather time consuming actually…
but don’t they look lovely?
Bill did most of the job…
I put them on a tray in the warm oven to dry out
then off to the shed to paint a picture of sunflowers!

where is the rain?

January 17, 2010
We watched this building yesterday…

Looked so promising! Thunder and lightening…big rain coming!
Can you see the rain over there on those hills?
It slipped right past us…we got a few drops, but the big rain went right around us. Sigh.

Introducing…

January 8, 2010
The latest member of our family!

now, I am really not what you would call ‘a dog person’, but this little thing is really something special. She is a Jack Russell x Pomeranian puppy.
the kitten is not quite sure what to make of her yet, but I think that in time they will be good friends

We got her to keep foxes away from our chickens…although I don’t think she’ll be taking on any foxes just yet!

The children are absolutely smitten, and the look on their faces is so worth it.
SO WHAT IS HER NAME? We can’t settle on anything yet…any suggestions????

quite summer days…

December 23, 2009
As we wait for the “spirit of xmas” to pass, we have been keeping busy doing a little book work, reading, and watching a few documentaries and classic films. Today the children are engrossed with lego! This is the same lego that Jono played with as a boy :)

I was so impressed with Jonah making this from the directions from scratch…

and Bridge and Bill made a few of these…

“Cat cat catty catty cat” (as Bill calls her) has been busy too…
