Belladonna is what Italian people called Nightshade plants.. they took extracts of the stem and used them like eyedrops.. those extracts were filled with an alkaloid called Atropine which dilates the pupils and encourages tears, making a woman or “Donna” look beautiful or “Bella” Hence Belladonna .. Clever italians!
Modern eye doctors use a synthetic atropine to get a better look at the pupil for mapping and stuff
