Great disscussion, guys. Jono, I appreciate the fact that you don’t over-edit these talks. Moments like Nehemia getting up to answer his door convey a great sense of honesty, as well as great humor. Please keep it up.
I have a question about Gen 25:18. As my fiance and I were reading the portion this week, she was using an NIV, and I was using a KJV. They read quite differently. I’m very aware of the translational liberties taken by NIV translators, but I also understand that the KJV has its limitations as well. Thanks to Brad Scott, Jeff Benner, and ultimately Yehovah, I have a basic working knowledge of Hebrew, but not nearly enough fluency to understand how or why such a big difference came up between the two versions for this verse.
KJV – And they dwelt from Havilah unto Shur, that is before Egypt, as thou goest
toward Assyria: and he died in the presence of all his brethren.
NIV – His descendants settled in the area from Havilah to Shur, near the eastern border
of Egypt, as you go toward Ashur. And they lived in hostility toward [fn] all the tribes
related to them.
Any insight would be helpful and appreciated. Shalom.
