We arrived at the Jordan across from Jericho to find Christians crossing themselves before immersing their white robed bodies into the greenish-grey, muddy water believing this to be the location where John the Baptist baptized Jesus. It was later explained to me that not only did the river contain fertilizers and chemicals, but even raw sewage! The Jews, however, acknowledge this as the traditional site where Joshua led the 12 tribes of Israel into the Promised Land, crossing over on dry land (Joshua 3:13-17).
