Yoel ben Shlomo – Aviv & Passover

The above photograph was taken by Nehemia Gordon in the Jordan Valley. It shows the barley in the state of aviv, and if you look closely you can see Yoel & Nehemia 😉

Jono, you don’t believe that the new day starts at sunset? I never heard of a Torah believer that doesn’t believe that. I would like to know what verses led you to that belief.
    Blessings!

    Hey Jono and Yoel!

Jono, I had no idea you believed the day begins at sunrise! That’s wonderful, I’m convinced of it and I think Scripture backs that opinion up. That word needs to get out, critical thinking rules! Here’s a great short video on when a day begins.

Also in regard to the dateline subject in connection with Rosh Chodesh I can’t agree with the opinion that the new moon must be proclaimed from Israel first. In the diaspora I’m practicing the faith as I will one day live the faith when I get back to the land of Israel. I use the moon to establish my calendar here and now, not then and there. Here’s a great short video on the dateline subject.

I do agree however that the barley fields of Israel along with Rosh Chodesh should be used as the marker of when the beginning of the year is. As it is only in Israel that the first fruits of the crop are offered. At least that makes sense to me. Thanks for the show and the great guests!

    Shalom, shalom

My wife said to me “I hope Yoel has a teaching on the Passover” and there it was! We knew we could depend on you Jono!

Yoel, I believe you and Nehemiah are quite possibly among the shepherds Jeremiah spoke of:

Jer 23:4 And I will set up shepherds over them which shall feed them: and they shall fear no more, nor be dismayed, neither shall they be lacking, saith YEHOVAH.

Now we need to accelerate this process so the righteous King of David will reign in the Land soon!:

Jer 23:5 “Behold, the days are coming, declares YEHOVAH, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.

Question, I definitely realize and experience the curse of not having a total understanding of Torah and the inability to observe it being outside of the Land.

So as gentile “strangers” how are we to apply Torah such as here in the U.S. where I live? For instance, finding employment to support a family while trying to faithfully observe the Sabbaths and Feast Days can be very challenging being outside of the Jewish community.

I’ve been blessed by our Maker with the ability to keep the weekly and annual Sabbaths off for the past 5yrs. Although if I were to seek more work and continue to ask for the Sabbaths off most employers think I’m nuts especially since I obviously look Chinese!

On top of this to tell an unbelieving employer the Feast Day Sabbaths are based upon the sighting of the New Moon they would believe I’ve totally lost it.

    Shalom Darren,
The freedom of religion should be something which is reinforced by law. I don’t really know what your profession is, but the fact you look Chinese does not mean you cannot be a convert. The answer is to insist that you follow Torah and want to convert. I know plenty of people who have not officially converted and take the Sabbaths off according the new moon. I pray to the one who commanded the Sabbath to help you find a way to overcome this problem.

Jono, I have wondered how the Israelites leaving Egypt followed the Passover without being in the land to know when the barley was aviv. After all, they wandered in the desert for 40 years. Has Nehemiah or Yoel explained this? By the way, I love all your programs, especially the Torah Pearls!

  8. Darren Chan says

    Shalom Yoel.

Through the grace of our Maker I have been able to observe the Sabbaths and keep in remembrance the Feast Days according to the new moon to this day.

Although I worry about future circumstances while raising a family and continuing to keep the Sabbaths. I guess it comes down to faith, diligence, determination, and prayer on my part.

I deeply appreciate your prayer that the one who commanded the Sabbaths continue to allow me and my family to keep them.

Your reply and prayer means so very much to us, thank you Yoel.
